FROM OUR FOUNDER

Meet Antonia.

In 1993 Antonia Rudenstine co-founded a competency-based school– though at the time this term did not exist. Over the 27 years since then,  Antonia has been driving the evolution of competency-based learning, viewing it as a key lever to support equity-focused, learner-centered classrooms, schools and systems. Her vision for reDesign is centered on the experience of young people and their access to opportunities to develop competency, experience deep connectedness, and use their agency to make positive change in their communities.

WHO WE ARE

We are a community of educators, coaches, designers, activators, provocateurs, entrepreneurs, researchers, and more. We share a set of beliefs about learning that drive our mission and influence our work.

We believe that all young people are able to learn, create, and achieve at high levels, and that our role is to dismantle barriers, and foster nurturing relationships and the supportive conditions that enable every learner to thrive in community.

Background team

In learner-centered communities, every young person and every adult has the opportunity to:

Experience connectedness

Learner-centered communities nurture the well-being of all learners– children and adults– in a safe, caring, and responsive environment.  Learners feel a strong sense of belonging within the learning community as a result of deep and meaningful relationships. The learning community itself is porous and connected to the broader community in mutually beneficial ways.

Develop competency

Learner-centered communities support learners in developing critical skills and capabilities that have lifelong value, such as skills related to literacy, problem-solving, and leading inquiry. They are important to the learner, and vital to health and strength of their community.

Build critical consciousness

Learner-centered communities embrace a social justice orientation, believing that a better world is possible when our educational institutions teach critical thinking and creative problem-solving, while fostering a sense of efficacy in every learner. Grounded in the ideas of philosopher and educator Paulo Freire, critical consciousness involves engaging learners in critically examining the world, and in taking action to challenge inequities and oppression.

Connectedness. Competency.

Critical Consciousness. That’s our jam.
